CHAVEZ WINS REFERENDUM ON UNLIMITED RE-ELECTION

Venuezuelan president Hugo Chávez has won the referendum which removes the limits on the number of terms that a president can serve. Mr Chávez will now be able to stand for re-election as often as he thinks necessary to complete his 'Bolivarian revolution'. His current four-year term, which would have been his last, ends in 2013.

The election committee overseeing the referendum said that 54 percent voted in favour of changing the constitution in line with Mr Chávez' proposal. Independent observers confirmed that the vote was free and fair.

When the result was announced, tens of thousands of Mr Chávez' supporters took to the streets to celebrate. The president himself appeared on the balcony of his palace in Carácas, sang the national anthem and congratulated Venezuelans on their 'great victory'. "If you voted Yes today, you voted for the revolution and for socialism," the president said.

Only if re-elected
Mr Chávez has let it be known that he wants to stay in power for at least another ten years. Theoretically he could stay in power for as long as he wants, provided he continues to have popular support, because he would still need to be re-elected every four years.

The change in the law does not just affect the presidency. Governors, mayors and members of parliament will also be able to stand for re-election indefinitely. This provision was included after a referendum in 2007 when a proposal was rejected which allowed only the president to serve an indefinite number of terms.
